The Zambia Union of Financial Institutions and Allied Workers (ZUFIAW) today welcomed the signing of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS), following a ceremony held at the Society’s new headquarters in Lusaka.
The Union delegation was led by Ms. Marina Mwape Kabonga, ZUFIAW Vice President, accompanied by Ms. Lusa Melinda Pellama, Union Delegation Leader. On the side of ZNBS, the ceremony was attended by Mrs. Mildred Nyamizyu Mutesa, Managing Director, and Mr. Christopher Lubumbe Kapoma, Human Resources Manager, among other senior management officials.
In her remarks, Ms. Kabonga emphasized that the agreement was the outcome of constructive dialogue and mutual respect between management and the union. She noted that management had, for the first time in recent history, approached the negotiations with a constructive and positive disposition. She commended this shift in posture, stating that it laid the foundation for open, respectful, and solutions-focused dialogue. As a result, she highlighted, negotiations were successfully concluded in a single day — a remarkable achievement and a demonstration of professionalism by both parties, proving what is possible when intentions are aligned toward delivering meaningful outcomes.
Ms. Kabonga further stated that the agreement reflected ZNBS’s recognition of employees’ contributions to organizational growth. She explained that the increments and allowances would significantly ease cost-of-living pressures for workers, while the performance-based component introduced a fair and transparent system of rewarding effort and productivity. She concluded by reminding stakeholders that labour relations need not be confrontational but can instead be collaborative, transparent, and focused on shared success.
Under the new agreement, ZUFIAW secured a 10 percent across-the-board salary increment, a performance appraisal adjustment of between 2 and 5 percent, and the introduction of a transport allowance of K600. The parties also agreed that salary arrears will be backdated to April 2025 and paid, ensuring fairness in implementation.
Ms. Kabonga reaffirmed that ZUFIAW values and promotes the spirit of hard work and will support fair implementation of the performance management system. Nevertheless, she cautioned that should management at any point mismanage the system in a way that disadvantages employees, the Union would not hesitate to intervene. She emphasized that ZUFIAW highly values the membership of employees at the Society and will always act to ensure that their interests and rights are fully protected.
