ZUFIAW Shines At The 6th Uni Conference

The Zambia Union of Financial Institutions and Allied Workers (ZUFIAW) are participating in a series of high-level UNI Africa conferences being held in Maputo, Mozambique from the 21st to 27th June 2025. The conferences are being held under the unifying theme: “Consolidating Working Class Power.

In an official update, ZUFIAW General Secretary and CEO, Mr. Kasapo Sundrea Kabende, announced that he, together with National Women’s Chairperson Comrade Patricia Sakala and National Youth Committee Member Comrade Chimanse Mwaba Wilson are participating in the Finance, Women’s, and Youth Conferences held as part of the 6th UNI Africa Regional Conference.

The three ZUFIAW delegates were honored to speak at their respective conferences where they proudly showcased the union’s contributions and ongoing work.

At the Youth Conference, Comrade Mwaba spoke on the creation and activation of youth structures across Africa, using ZUFIAW as a shining example of youth engagement and participation within trade unions.

Comrade Patricia Sakala addressed the Women’s Conference, where she highlighted several critical issues, including:

  • The development of women’s leadership within the union movement
  • Combatting workplace violence through ILO Convention 190
  • Advocating for the inclusion of parental rights in collective bargaining agreements
  • Emphasizing the importance of women’s health and well-being in the workplace.

Meanwhile, General Secretary Mr. Kabende took to the podium during the Finance Conference, where he spoke about:

  • The importance of organizing and collective bargaining as tools for union growth, referencing on the challenges faced following the enactment and operationalization of the Emoluments Commission
  • The rise of retrenchments due to technological changes
  • The inclusion of women and youth in all union citing ZUFIAW as an example to other Unions on the continent.

In a significant achievement for ZUFIAW and Zambia, the General Secretary and CEO Mr. Kasapo Sundrea Kabende and National Women’s Committee Chairperson Ms. Patricia Sakala were both elected as Titular Members of the UNI Africa Finance and Women’s Committees respectively.

The General Secretary Mr. Kabende concluded his message by expressing gratitude for the support rendered by the union members and requested continued prayers as they proudly represent ZUFIAW on the continental stage.
